Examine the Verse
Isaiah 9:6
This verse is claimed
to provide the basis of the Trinitarian belief
that God is the Triune God, existing as
three persons―God
the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, but one being.
|
For unto us a Child
is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His
shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
(Isaiah 9:6, New King James Version) |
|
|
For a child is born unto us.
A son is given unto us;
And the government is upon his shoulder;
and his name is called
"Pele-joez-el-gibbor-Abi-ad-sar-shalom."
(Isaiah
9:6, The Holy Scriptures According to the
Masoretic Text, 1917
edition) |
|
|
For a child is born to us,
a son is
given to us;
dominion will rest on his shoulders,
and he
will be given the name
Pele-Yo'etz El Gibbor Avi-'Ad Sar-Shalom
[Wonder of a Counselor, Mighty God, Father of Eternity,
Prince of Peace],

9:6, Complete Jewish Bible) |

Trinitarian Belief in
God and Jesus Christ:
Trinitarians believe in the Trinity, that God is the "Triune God"
existing as
three persons―
God the Father,
God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, but one being.
All three are
eternal
with no beginning.
Members of the Trinity are
co-equal and co-eternal,
one in
essence, nature, power, action, and will.
Trinitarians believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal second person
"God the Son",
who took on a human body and nature and became
both man and God.
Thus is Jesus is fully man
and fully God simultaneously. |

Apostle's admonition, warning and
unique way of teaching:
1.
No prophecy of scripture is a matter of personal
interpretation. (II Pt. 1:20, NAB)
2. Do not go beyond what
is written. (I
Cor. 4:6, NIV)
3.
We do not use words of human wisdom. We speak words given to
us by the Spirit,
using the Spirit's words to explain spiritual truths. (1
Cor. 2:13, NLT) |

Points to Consider: |
|
|
1. Notice
that the above verse is about Prophet Isaiah's prophecy
about the son and about the name to be
given to the son.
2. Please take note that the name is a long Jewish
name "Pele-joez-el-gibbor-Abi-ad-sar-shalom" which when it
was translated to English was made into several and separate
English words. One of which is the word "Mighty God".
|
Jewish
scholars understand this verse which is originally
written in their language—that the name in this
prophecy does not indicate Christ's alleged divinity.
Biblical names of persons such as Eliphelet (the God
of deliverance) and Elihu (whose God is he [Jehovah])
and places like Elkosh (God my bow) and El-bethel (the God
of bethel) [Smith's Bible Dictionary. pp.163-167] |
As in the above verse Isaiah 9:6, the examples given also
contain descriptions about God,
but no serious
theologian so far claim that those persons and places are
God.
3. If Trinitarians insist that the Son is God just
because part of the name given to the Son is "Mighty God",
then they must also accept the absurd, that the Son is also
Father because part of the name given to the Son is "Father
of Eternity or everlasting Father"?
4. How can the above verse be made as a basis of the
the Trinity doctrine when the verse do not even mention the
other person "God the Holy Spirit", or any of
the Trinitarian elements that the three persons are
co-equal, co-eternal; one in essence, action, power and
will?
5. Is the verse Isaiah 9:6 really about the Trinity
or about God the Son? Or, is it a prophecy about the
name and authority of the Son? |
